Introducing the Alumni Mentorship Programme

The anticipation towards life after high school often generates great excitement and an equal amount of anxiety: which university should I apply to? How do I know which field of study is worth pursuing? To what extent is my choice going to impact my future career? And how should I prepare for that right now? The list of questions goes on, unique to every student and family. While university counsellors and teachers are here to help, we want to do more.

So we launched our first Alumni Mentorship Programme (AMP).

It is a programme that aims to connect Dulwich alumni with current students to provide support, advice and valuable insights into the transition from school to university to career, encompassing university applications, professional development and even mental health. Alumni volunteers will have the opportunity to mentor a student one on one, using their own experiences in and out of Dulwich to help inspire, expand and elevate a younger generation’s vision for tomorrow.

“We can supplement the work of our counsellors with the perspective of people who have recently gone through the transition from high school to university and the early stages of professional life,”says Martin Wendeler, a Dulwich alumnus and currently a final year student at the University of Manheim. “We can share our mistakes and successes from a more recent perspective and from an eye-to-eye level.” He believes that his own recent experiences and academic choices are key to helping those only a few years younger than he.

Martin Zarate, a student counsellor at Dulwich College International Shanghai Puxi, sees the programme as a bridge between the guidance he provides and the more up-to-date, practical experiences of students at university or those embarking upon careers. “This will really help our students,” he says. “When they hear firsthand from a primary source, it does click or spark something in them. We must open students’ eyes and minds.”

For alumni, AMP was a great reason to rejoin the Dulwich family. One alumnus recently wrote: “I hadn’t been very involved and active since I graduated in 2016, but I think this is a perfect opportunity for me to connect with more people, and to impart my experience and knowledge to younger students.”

A good leader inspires others to turn their[RK1]  vision into reality, while a great leader inspires others to create their own vision and to become leaders themselves. In developing our students as Worldwise leaders who can make a positive difference in the world, we believe that when visions are shared and connected, the future for our younger generation knows no limits.
